Hubs and switches are fundamental networking devices used to connect multiple computers or devices within a local area network. They play an important role in managing data traffic and ensuring that connected devices can communicate efficiently. While both devices serve a similar purpose, their functionality and performance differ significantly, making it essential to understand how each works and when to use them.
Understanding Network Hubs
A hub is one of the simplest types of networking devices. It works by receiving data from one device and broadcasting it to all other connected devices. This means every device connected to the hub receives the data, even if it is not the intended recipient. Because of this broadcast method, hubs often cause unnecessary network traffic, leading to slow performance in larger networks. Hubs operate at the physical layer of the OSI model and do not have the intelligence to filter or analyze data. They are mostly used today only in very small or basic networks where security and performance are not major concerns.
